About Belfast Unique Style Calligraphy

B.U.S.C. came into being in the 1960’s, when an art teacher had taken an interest in pupils who were shy and un-motivated. She taught some of those pupils drawing, pottery, painting and in my case – calligraphy. The Art teacher believed strongly that if you were able to tap in to the creative side of pupils it would lead to better self esteem, positivity and self worth in the future years! Bless all those teachers that went the extra mile! Calligraphy opened many doors for a 13 year old; and after a year of mastering this, I was asked to write the place cards for a reunion dinner in Trinity College, Dublin.

After leaving school, the calligraphy was a good asset to have when working in a drawing office, as the maps had to be very neatly written upon. Over the next years, as friends and family got to know about this hobby of mine, I was able to inscribe bibles, books weddings albums, guest books, weddding stationery etc. Although working full time it was still a pleasure to undertake some calligraphy, as this was a good way to relax. Over the years I have also sold pictures with calligraphy and flowers to people looking for something different. Now after taking early retirement I have turned this hobby into a small business. The uniqueness of the style of writing is used to meet the individuals choice and requirements.

In the last few years since commencing my calligraphy business, on a full time basis, I have seen a continued interest from customers, who still see it as a speciality art form. (Calligraphy – the art of beautiful handwriting) and my focus is on delivering a specialised service for each individual person.
Although I have been doing calligraphy for well over 45 years now, in the past it would have been wedding invitations, place cards, the front page of a wedding album – and book of inscriptions, or a poem written and framed.
Today, I see customers being more creative about what they would like, and are not afraid to put across their very own personal requests ie- seating plans, with a special theme and corresponding table cards – see more examples on our seating plan page.
